Horses are amazing animals with incredible physiques and I wanted to capture the magnificence and athleticism of a horse in full Gallop. Inspired by the spectacular achievements of Black Caviar and Winx I have created this piece to honour their greatness and to create a discussion about animals in entertainment. Australians love horse racing and it's audience is increasing with over 10 Billion dollars waged with bookmakers every year, yet after every Melbourne cup we hear of horse injuries and death, caused perhaps, by our need for entertainment. Without the horse racing industry we never would have had the opportunity to marvel at the greatness of these two racehorses, yet every time I hear of an injury or death my enthusiasm fades. I have spoken to former trainers, breeders and horse racers and the constant theme discussed is that some horses are just born to run and regardless of whether they are on a race track, in the bush or in a paddock, injury for some and certainly death is inevitable. What do you think?
Created with bits and pieces from my local Scrap and steel yard and timber off cuts from the discard pile of a friends wood-working shed.
